Compos Mentis runs Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Mornings are typically spent doing physical work on the farm. With the guidance of staff and volunteers, apprentices work together to help care for our ½ acre vegetable garden, perennial flower and herb gardens, hoop house, and rabbits and chickens. Apprentices also have the opportunity to learn about beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, managing a composting system, basic construction skills, and various other topics related to farming and gardening. Our hope is that the farm work provides a structure, physical activity, and wholesome meaningful work that will be of benefit to our apprentices as they recover from an episode of illness.
Afternoon activities vary throughout the week and are intended to promote self awareness and wellness. These activities include writing, art, mindfulness practice (including meditation and chi kung), readings, and group discussions on topics related to mental health. Apprentices are encouraged to create a wellness plan that will help them manage their illness by learning how to identify early signs and symptoms and knowing when to seek help from family, friends, or mental health professionals. Staff and volunteers are available to support apprentices as they explore these issues.
Each day at the farm is anchored by a mid-day community meal. Apprentices help prepare delicious dishes from the garden and share a family-style lunch. During lunch, important informal conversations often take place as apprentices, volunteers, and staff share and learn from each other.
